Dr Kimani has a PhD in early years’ education. Mary has a wide range of experience in education, business, and disability sectors. As the CEO and Founder of Super Community Care (SCC), Mary has a passion of supporting and improving the quality of life not only for people living with disability through supported independent living and accommodation; but also, international students by offering them jobs and on the job training. SCC has offered job opportunities for hundreds of newly arrived students from Kenya and other parts of Africa giving them a head start and a livelihood here in Australia. These students have not only been able to pay for their school fees but have also supported their families back in Kenya. Furthermore, the work experience gained through SCC, has enabled these students access the Australian job market, without which, it would be difficult to have such inroads.
Mary’s experiences in education span over 30 years and include research, lecturing at universities, classroom teaching and training of in-service and preservice teachers, in Kenya, Australia and internationally in general. Specifically, Mary worked as a Research Fellow with Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER), a Senior Program Manager for early childhood development and Education at Plan International Australia, a curriculum developer with Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) and as a lecturer at Daystar University.
Mary has extensive experience in international development work and bilateral relations including research in education in East and South Africa –Kenya, Malawi, South Africa, Uganda and Zimbabwe, all projects funded by World Bank and EUNICEF. Between 2019 and 2022, Mary was the Vice Chair of the Advisory Group on Australia-Africa Relations (AGAAR), tasked with informing Australia’s engagement and policies on Sub-Saharan Africa.
